Itineraries

DAY 01:

Airport/Bus station – La Rioja

We will welcome you at the La Rioja airport or bus station and we will transfer to the planned accommodation. The rest of the day will be free to go near this particular city. Lodging in hotel.

DAY 02:

La Rioja – Belén

We will move on local vehicles to the town of Belén, in the province of Catamarca. Approximate hours of trip: 3 hs. Lodging in hotel. Meals: Breakfast

DAY 03:

Belén – Las Sarchubas (walking time: 5/6 hs)

After breakfast, we will move in local vehicles to the town of Pozo de Piedra (2400 m) through Belén River Valley along the legendary Route 40. Approximate we will travel for 1 hs. Here we will begin our march fording the Blanco River and slowly climbing by a path that is only used by people with their pack animals to transport their products and handicrafts. In the end, almost with the sunset over us, we will reach Puesto Las Sarchubas (2700 m) ideal for our first night on the banks of a small stream surrounded by hills place. Lodging in Semi Full Camp. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch box and dinner.

DAY 04:

Las Sarchubas – Las Vallas (walking time: 5 hs)

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we will prepare the backpacks to continue the journey. We will climb and reach the Paso Portezuelo (3050 m) where we will dominate the whole valley of the Las Vallas River under the imposing custody of Cerro San Basilio (4200 m). We will start down until we will reach the hamlet of Las Vallas (2730 m) where about 10 families live off their crafts and the foods that provide their animals. A few houses, corrals, a school and a small church make up the daily life of this community. Lodging in Simple accommodation. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch box and dinner.

DAY 05:

Las Vallas - Los Colorados (walking time: 6 hs)

We will continue our march observing rock formations that resemble hundreds of caves. Lunch at Las Trancas and from there we will continue until we will reach our camp in Los Colorados, an ancient pre-Inca settlement in which one can still see small stone walls, walls and mortars between pastures. Lodging in Semi Full Camp. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch box and dinner.

DAY 06:

Los Colorados – Puesto Zapata (walking time: 4/5 hs)

We will restart our journey southwards, along the Quebrada of Quimil River and walking on the sandy soil of the riverbed and then we will arrive at the small chutes and we will reach to Puesto Zapata (2600 m). Lodging in Simple accommodation. Meals included: Breakfast, lunch box and dinner.

DAY 07:

Puesto Zapata – Shinkal – Belèn (walking time: 3 hs)

We will begin our last day of the journey on foot with an incentive to reach the end of the pre-Inca trail that leads us to the ruins of Shinkal (1300 m) (National Historical Monument). Just a few hours in the wide riverbed of Quimil River and a forest felling separate us from these magnificent buildings that are preserved almost in its original state: the Plaza de Armas, the Kallanka, the Ushnu, ceremonial platforms among other buildings- up what it was this South Administrative Center of the Inca Empire. In less than an hour we can go around and be fascinated with the stories that give us the local guides. After the tour we will move in local vehicles to Finca Don Cacho to celebrate the end of the journey with a good roast (asado). From there we will back before nightfall to the town of Belén. Hotel accommodation. Lodging in hotel. Meals: Breakfast and lunch box.

DAY 08:

Belén - La Rioja airport or Bus station

After breakfast, we will be transfered to the Airport or Bus Station in the city of La Rioja where our program ends. Meals included: Breakfast.

  • 02 nights in semi – full camp (include tents or dining rooms, not include sleeping bag or insulating mat)

  • The transports will be combined between regular and private services
  • Mules for the transportation of tents, general equipment and food throughout the journey; and the “porteo” the personal equipment of the passengers for the voyage (max. 8 kg, between days 3 to 7)
